Echo Lake Pipeline Sampling, Echo Lake, California
Stratus personnel sampled various coating materials that were used to repair leaks along the Echo Lake conduit. The purpose of the sampling was to determine if asbestos was present in the cold tar material. Samples of the black bituminous coating were taken from both the riveted and welded sections of the pipeline, in areas from where the coating was applied directly to the pipeline as well as on top of the fibrous mat surrounding the pipe. Laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of asbestos in the mat material, ranging from 40-45% Chrysotile asbestos. Consequently, the mat material is classified as a Regulated Asbestos Containing Material, which will require special handling for transportation and disposal. No asbestos was detected in patching material applied in multiple locations along the riveted pipeline.
