Street Sweeper Dump Sites, Fremont, California

The City of Fremont has four properties on which they temporarily stockpile street sweeper debris before it is loaded and transferred to a local landfill for proper disposal. The City’s concern was that the wet sweeper debris may be leaching hazardous materials to the soil and possibly creating a runoff issue when it rains. Some of the sweeper debris dump sites are near waterways and one drains to a City park.

Stratus collected soil samples from each site in order to determine if leaching of suspected contaminants had occurred. Samples were analyzed for constituents including: TPHd, TPHg, TPHmo, BTEX, and naphthalene, and Luft 5 Metals (Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn). Analytical results indicated minimal impact to soil and the main contaminants identified were TPHmo and TPHd associated with typical vehicle operation on the City’s roadways. Results were presented to the local oversight committee and it was determined additional action was warranted in order to eliminate the possibility of further downward migration of contaminants of concern.
